Kidney Stone Surgery in India

Most often, patients get rid of kidney stones without any treatment. But in case it gets stuck, you must opt for kidney stone surgery. Well, if you are someone who is recently diagnosed with kidney stones or you know someone who has been diagnosed, there is not much to worry about!

What are kidney stones?

Calcium or waste products such as uric acid get deposited along with other minerals to form kidney stones. They may appear small in the beginning, but if left untreated, they may grow bigger in size with the passing of time. Kidney stone surgery in India has become one of the most commonly opted procedures today. As the kidney stones get stuck in the urinary tract, you may start feeling tremendous pain. Here are a few reasons when you should be going for surgery:
  • Feeling a lot of pain.
  • Stone has become larger, and it isn't able to pass by on its own.
  • The stone blocked the urine flow by any chance.
  • You might be suffering from urinary tract infections.

Causes of kidney stones

If you are experiencing pain while urinating, seeing blood in your urine, or may have developed an infection in your urinary tract, you must see a doctor at the earliest! Here are the possible causes:

Type 2 diabetes

  • Dehydration
  • Obesity
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • High level of chemicals in urine
  • Congenital kidney detect

Treatment for small kidney stones

If you have smaller kidney stones, they would easily pass out! Here are the following processes to give a try:
    • Pain relievers
Naproxen Sodium or Ibuprofen may help you get rid of the pain, which is quite common for you to feel in case you have got a small stone in your kidney.
    • Drinking lots of water
Drinking approximately 1.8 to 3.6 L of water in a day will help the kidney stones to pass through your urine.
  • Medical therapies
Most commonly, medications such as alpha-blockers - tamsulosin and a mix of tamsulosin and dutasteride are used to help treat kidney infections and stones with lesser pain.

Kidney stone removal procedure types:

There are primarily four types of kidney stone surgery in India procedures:
    • Ureteroscopy:
This process is used to treat stones in ureters or kidneys. No cuts are made to the skin, but a thin, flexible scope is passed through the bladder and the ureter into the kidney. Small stones are removed with the help of a basket, while a laser is used to help you get rid of the larger stones. A stent is placed in the ureter to drain the urine from your kidney to the bladder, and then it is taken out by the doctor on your next visit approximately after a week's span.
    • Shock Wave Lithotripsy
SWL works really well for both small and medium-sized kidney stones. This process does not involve any cuts, and ultrasound or X-ray is basically passed to detect the stones in the kidney. A high-energy shock wave is passed through the kidney to break down the stones into small pieces. A stent is put into the ureter, and you will need to drink a lot of water to flush then out through the urine.
    • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy
If lithotripsy isn't capable of breaking down the stones you had in your kidney, or in case the stone has grown bigger in size, this option should be your lookout! You can simply use a small tube to reach up to the stone or use high-frequency sound waves to break them down. The surgeon will have to make a small cut to place the scope into the hole, at your back or your side to pull out the stone. The process will not take more than 20 to 35 minutes, and you might have to stay admitted to the hospital for a day or two post the surgery.
  • Open surgery
Although this procedure is not that popular in today's times, it is opted when your stone doesn't get removed through other methods or in case the stone is too large in size.

Tips to prepare yourself for a kidney stone surgery

Here are a few instructions to note before you prepare yourself for a kidney stone surgery:
  • Quit smoking prior to the surgery
  • Stop intaking any eatable or fluid post-midnight before the day of the surgery to be conducted.
  • Stop intaking any medicine or blood thinner, which may make blood clotting difficult.

Kidney stones prevention

You may lower the risk of developing stones in your kidney by including a few changes to your lifestyle. Here are they:
  • Drink a lot of water every day. You will start getting light and clear urine passing through while you pee!
  • Lower the intake of salt and animal protein in your diet.
  • Reduce the intake of oxalate-rich foods such as spinach, beets, lady's fingers, nuts, chocolate, soy products, and black pepper.
It's good to eat calcium-rich foods. But you should start taking calcium supplements only after a thorough consultation with your doctor. For more details on appointments and consultation for  Kidney Stone Surgery in India, connect to Tripo Heal.
